There is a special frustration in ranking fourth and being skipped. The rankings work paid off; the snippet is losing the interview. That gap between position and clicks is the cheapest traffic you can recover, because nothing needs to outrank anyone.

Here is the finding routine, the diagnosis and the snippet repairs.

Find the below-band queries

Click-through falls with position on a curve, and your underperformers are the queries sitting below the curve.

~25% at position 1 high single digits by 4 low single digits past 6 your page: position 4, CTR 1.2% below the curve = snippet problem, not a rankings problem
The curve is the benchmark. Distance below it, at stable position, is recoverable traffic.

The GSC routine: Performance report, queries with all four metrics on, filter to positions 1 to 10, sort by impressions and scan CTR against the rough bands. A position-4 query at 1 percent with real impressions is your work order.

One prerequisite before diagnosing: the position must be stable. CTR only means something measured at a steady position, so park anything mid-wobble.

Diagnose the skip

Search the query in a private window and look at your own result the way a stranger does, next to its neighbors.

Fix 1: the title, which is most of it

The title is the click decision for most searchers. The anatomy that earns its position's full CTR:

the query's own words a specific promise freshness marker front-loaded, unmissable a number, an outcome, a method year or "tested", where honest "Keyword Cannibalization: Find It and Fix It" beats "Some Thoughts on a Common SEO Problem" Same page, different interview performance.
Query words, then the promise, then freshness, inside the width that displays. Titles built this way also survive Google's rewriter.

Rewrite the title, keep everything else constant, and give it two to four weeks. Judge by CTR at the same position, and keep a log so wins become your house style.

Fix 2: the description as ad copy

Google rewrites descriptions freely, but keeps yours more often when it plainly addresses the query. Write 150-odd characters that state the answer's shape and the reason to pick you: the specific, the recency, the artifact ("with a checklist").

Fix 3: earn the extras

Snippet real estate beyond text raises clicks: visible dates (kept honest per the refresh rules), breadcrumbs from clean structure, and structured data where the content legitimately qualifies. None are magic; each adds a few percent of surface.

Fix 4: the feature play

When an answer box or AI summary sits above the organics, part of the CTR loss is structural, and the response is either winning the feature or serving what survives it.

Winning it means structuring your answer the way the feature quotes: the direct answer in the first lines, then the depth. Serving the survivors means targeting the follow-up intent the box cannot finish: the comparison, the walkthrough, the edge cases. Both beat mourning the old curve.

The one-line takeaway: find stable-position queries clicking below their band, then fix the interview: front-loaded specific titles, descriptions written as ad copy, honest freshness, and a feature plan where the SERP reshaped. Recovered CTR is traffic with no ranking fight attached.
