Google Search Console is the only place rankings come from Google instead of from a bot pretending to search. It is free, unlimited and slightly misleading if you do not know how to read it.
Here is the proper setup: the filters that matter, the average-position trap, and the export habit that builds history Google will not keep for you.
Step 1: live in the Performance report
Everything ranking-related sits in one report: Performance, then Search results. Queries, pages, countries and devices, each with clicks, impressions, CTR and position.
First habit: turn on all four metric tiles, because position without impressions is a number without context. A position 4 with ten impressions a month is a different fact than a position 4 with ten thousand.
Step 2: defuse the average-position trap
GSC's position is an average across every impression the query earned, and averages hide the story.
Unfiltered position is for trends only. Any absolute reading needs a device and country filter first, or it is arithmetic fiction.
Step 3: split brand from non-brand
Brand queries rank position 1 forever and flood your averages with false comfort. The regex filter separates them once and for all.
Query filter, Custom (regex), and a pattern like brandname|brand name set to "Doesn't match" shows your real SEO performance: the keywords you actually compete for. Save both views and read non-brand as your scoreboard.
Step 4: the five views worth bookmarking
| View | Filter setup | It answers |
|---|---|---|
| Non-brand trend | Queries minus brand regex | Is SEO actually growing? |
| Money pages | Pages filter on key URLs | Are the pages that pay holding? |
| Striking distance | Position 5-15, by impressions | What is one push from page one? |
| Device gap | Compare mobile vs desktop | Where does the ranking differ? |
| 28-day compare | Compare with previous period | What moved, in either direction? |
The striking-distance view is the profit center: keywords sitting 5 to 15 with real impressions are the cheapest wins on your site, needing a content touch rather than a campaign.
Step 5: export monthly, because Google forgets
GSC keeps 16 months and then deletes. Every month, export the queries and pages tables to a dated spreadsheet tab; three minutes, and in two years you own history Google no longer has.
The comparison ritual that makes exports pay: this month vs last month, sorted by click change. The risers tell you what to double down on, the fallers are your triage list.
The honest limits
Three things GSC will never do. The data runs 2 to 3 days behind, so it reports history, not this morning. Long-tail queries are partially hidden for privacy, so your click total exceeds the sum of listed queries. And nothing alerts you: GSC waits politely for you to notice a collapse.
Those gaps are exactly what the tracking layers in our free rank trackers roundup exist to fill: same Google data, daily checks and alerts on top.
The one-line takeaway: GSC is the truth, averaged. Filter by device and country before believing a position, split brand from non-brand with one regex, bookmark the striking-distance view, and export monthly because the 16-month window is always closing.
